Welcome to Hill City School District 51-2
What is Special Education?
Special education is specially designed instruction and support provided to students who have a disability and need additional services to make meaningful educational progress. The goal of special education is to help students access their education, develop their skills, and reach their individual potential. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a document that outlines a student's unique educational needs based on their disability and the services and supports they will receive.
To be eligible for special education services, a student must:
- Be evaluated in accordance with federal and state guidelines.
- Meet the criteria for one of the disability categories recognized under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Demonstrate that the disability has an adverse impact on educational performance.
- Require specially designed instruction in order to make educational progress.
